The hippopotamus is a mammal native to Africa. It is special because it can live both in and out of water. It can even stay in the water for long periods of time. They eat mostly fish and other things. They are naturally docile creatures, but they can become very violent if provoked. I know I wouldn’t want a giant hippo charging at me. In fact, hippos kill more people annually than sharks do.
In early Africa, hippos used to be caught for their meat, mostly by the natives. However, that has changed by the rise of domesticated animals like cows and chickens. Now, the problem is that poachers hunt hippos for their tusks so that they can get ivory. This is becoming a problem as it is with the rhino as I blogged about in a previous post. Hopefully the hippo does not become endangered and continues to live a large happy life in the water.
